<p>Social platform <a href="http://meebo.com" target="_blank">Meebo</a> has named <strong>Daniel Bernstein</strong> vice president and head of business development and emerging revenue. Bernstein previously worked in client services at Bite Communications.</p>
<p>Video advertising management platform <a href="http://vindicogroup.com" target="_blank">VINDICO</a> has named <strong>Jes Santoro</strong> senior vice president of sales. Previously Santoro served as vice president of sales at NBCUniversal.</p>
<p>Aegis Group&#8217;s <a href="http://carat.com" target="_blank">Carat USA</a> has welcomed <strong>Laura Hernandez</strong> as head of multicultural. Hernandez was previously vice president and connections director of SMG Multicultural for Starcom MediaVest Group. <p>Along with its new European headquarters in London, <a href="http://buddymedia.com" target="_blank">Buddy Media</a> announced that <strong>Luca Benini</strong> is joining the company as managing director of Europe, effective August 1. Previously, Benini served as vice president and commercial director of comScore Europe.</p>

<p>Matt Belson has been named vice president and account director of the global Dell brand at agency <a href="http://arn.com" target="_blank">Arnold Worldwide</a>. Belson spent nine years at Young &amp; Rubicam in New York, where he most recently served as global account director for Dell.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.o2.co.uk" target="_blank">O2 Media</a> has named Kelly Wearmouth head of content partnerships. Previously Wearmouth was head of MSN.co.uk sales at Microsoft Advertising.</p>
<p>Time Inc.&#8217;s <a href="http://mni.com" target="_blank">Media Networks</a> appointed Matthew Fanelli vice president of digital. Fanelli, who joined the company in 2007, was previously executive director of digital media.</p>
<p>Richard Gringas, CEO of Salon Media Group, is heading over to Google to lead the global news products division. Before jumping over to Salon, Gringas served as a Google advisor on media product strategy.</p>
<p>Aegis Media Group agency <a href="http://na.isobar.com" target="_blank">Isobar</a> appointed Sara Ramsey managing director of its San Francisco office. Ramsey has held leadership roles at T3, Publicis Modem, OgilvyOne and Wunderman, but was last seen serving as vice president of account management at Real Branding. Previous San Fran managing director has shifted to another within Aegis Media North America. Speaking of Aegis Media, Andre Andrade has been moved from CEO of Aegis Media to CEO of Aegis Media Iberia.</p>

<p>The snack brand is running the first sponsored campaign on <a href="http://www.meebo.com/quest" target="_blank">Meebo&#8217;s Quest platform</a>, a rewards expansion on the <a href="http://www.adotas.com/2010/11/meebo-looking-more-like-a-social-network/" target="_blank">check-in system introduced in November</a>. Cheetos is aiming to tack up <a href="https://www.meebo.com/quest/q/bmb-2011" target="_blank">1 billion minutes of break time</a> by encouraging Meebo users to check in via their Meebo bars on browsers or on Meebo&#8217;s iPhone app. The 100 goof-off worthy sites run the gamut: Google, The Onion, TMZ &#8212; there&#8217;s no simple term to classify them all.</p>
<p>Wasting time will earn you virtual rewards such as badges and &#8220;real rewards&#8221; like paper trophies. (I won a &#8220;Naked Chester&#8221; just for visiting the site &#8212; it sounds like it should be a term on Urban Dictionary, but I swear it&#8217;s just a paper doll.) The elite goofer-offers will receive lifesize portraits of themselves made entirely from Cheetos. I kid you not &#8212; the Cheetos guys have done it before for celebrities like <a href="http://www.cheetos.com/view/video/cheetos-rachael-ray/" target="_blank">Rachael Ray</a>. You can check your status in the procrastination race on the leaderboard and watch live updates from all competitors.</p>
<p>The Cheetos campaign epitomizes how Quests work &#8212; Meebo encourages content discovery and check-ins through rewards and contests. Meebo is launching its own &#8220;Summer of Movies Quest&#8221; today to encourage users to engage with content about the season&#8217;s blockbuster films.</p>
<p>“Our goal with Quests is to bring a fun way for people to discover interesting content on the Web while rewarding them for their participation,” said Meebo CEO Seth Sternberg, Meebo’s Co-founder and CEO. “We fielded research that says users are looking for easier ways to uncover content specific to their tastes through like-minded people. Quests not only give people a way to do this through our Web check-in system, but they make it interesting with an achievement-based platform.”</p>

<p>Besides that, <a href="http://blogs.skype.com/en/2011/03/advertising.html" target="_blank">Skype&#8217;s new display ads</a> &#8212; which will only appear in consumer Windows versions &#8212; are simply banners on the home tab, nothing more intrusive than you&#8217;d find on&#8230; Well, just about every website. Oh yeah, the ads can support audio and video, as well as be dismissed by clicking the close button. Sounds&#8230; noninvasive.</p>
<p>At first, Skype will only serve an ad from one brand a day based on market &#8212; U.S., the U.K. and Germany are the launch markets. Meebo has been chosen to sell ad space in the U.S., while Ad2One and Ströer Interactive will handle the U.K. and Germany respectively.</p>
<p>In the press release the company repeats a few times that consumer experience is priority numero uno &#8212; users aren&#8217;t going to be interrupted mid-phone call with an offer to refinance their mortgage.</p>
<p>However, all of the non-PPI demographic data Skype has available in its system must be fantastic for targeting &#8212; we&#8217;re talking 145 million average users active monthly and 560 million registered in total. Not wanting to irk its users, Skype has been upfront about the ease of opting out of data-sharing.</p>
<p>Initially plugged advertisers are Groupon, Universal Pictures and Visa, while <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/03/07/in-the-search-for-more-revenue-skype-rolls-out-advertisements-in-windows-client/" target="_blank">TechCrunch</a> has learned that Nokia, Volkswagen and Disney have also made deals with Skype.</p>
<p>Skype has put down the legwork for an IPO, and an advertising revenue stream will likely look more impressive than the subscription service, which boasts only 8.1 million users.</p>

The last few months have seen development upon development: after giving users the ability to <a style="color: #2c4fff; padding: 0px; margin: 0px;" href="http://www.adotas.com/2010/11/meebo-looking-more-like-a-social-network/" target="_blank">check into their favorite websites</a> in November and closing a Series D round of funding with $25 million, Meebo announced that its <a href="http://www.adotas.com/2011/01/milestones-meebo-dbg-appcelerator-and-lijit/">U.S. audience had reached 76.6 million, a 123% increase year over year.</a></p>
<p>Further shape-shifting appears to be on the horizon with the acquisition of <a href="http://mindset-media.com" target="_blank">Mindset Media</a>, which specializes in psychographic audience measurement and ad targeting. Meebo had been partnering with the targeting firm for the last year.</p>
<p>Mindset goes beyond demographics to link consumers with advertisers using psychographic profiles and personality types based on browsing behavior collected through cookies. The New York-based company will operate as a business unit within Meebo and manage its own client base.</p>

However, a lot of companies in the interactive advertising industry can boast about pretty good 2010s (especially compared to 2009). Here are some impressive stats recently sent my way:</p>
<p>Social dashboard <a href="http://meebo.com" target="_blank">Meebo</a>, which gave users the ability to <a href="http://www.adotas.com/2010/11/meebo-looking-more-like-a-social-network/" target="_blank">check into their favorite websites</a> in November, discovered through comScore that it&#8217;s U.S. had reached 76.6 million, a 123% increase year over year.</p>
<p><a href="http://dbgroup.tv" target="_blank">Digital Broadcasting Group</a> (DBG), which in 2010 produced 20 original web programs as well as <a href="http://www.adotas.com/2010/07/let-the-geek-rock-stream-hp-dbg-broadcast-weezer/">simultaneously streaming Weezer across the Internet and on a Times Square jumbotron</a>, announced that it doubled its revenue in 2010 and now has a reach of about 90 million monthly video viewers.</p>
<p><a href="http://appcelerator.com" target="_blank">Appcelerator</a> &#8212; the company behind open-source, cross-platform native mobile app engine Titanium &#8212; boasted that it has doubled in size since November.</p>
<p>Custom search enabler <a href="http://lijit.com" target="_blank">Lijit</a> announced it has active placement on 15,000 site and hit 1 billion monthly page views, a 240% year-over-year increase.</p>

<p>All these appendages make Meebo look less like a bridge between social platforms&#8230; And more like a social network.</p>
<p>Just like a Facebook Like button, any type of site &#8212; be it blog, brand site, commerce site or gaming site &#8212; can add a Meebo check-in button. Several partners have signed up for the launch, including Macy&#8217;s and Sprint.</p>
<p>When a Meebo user slides over the button, he of she can see which other users have recently checked in as well as the total number of check-ins at the site. Instead of Foursquare badeges, Meebo offers VIP status to users who check in frequently to certain sites, and updates will include a reward program.</p>
<p>Check-ins will be public by default, but Meebo can change who sees check-ins in their account setting.</p>
<p>In addition, the Meebo MiniBar will not be stocked with tiny bottles of gin and whiskey but will serve as a browser extension allowing Meebo users to keep in contact with their social networks at any time while browsing. On launch, the extension will be available for Firefox and Chrome and later this year for Internet Explorer and Safari.</p>
<p>In addition to a list of friends, followers and followees (those being followed, of course), the new profile pages will feature a feed highlighting check-in activity, shared content and more.</p>
<p>So I doubt I&#8217;m the only one wondering, but what on earth are they going to do with all that audience data?</p>

<p>Once again I found myself at another online advertising party on Manhattan’s Far West Side, mingling with the likes of <a href="http://omd.com" target="_blank">OMD</a>, <a href="http://mediacom.com" target="_blank">Mediacom</a>, <a href="http://mediavestww.com" target="_blank">MediaVest</a> and several other high-profile agencies. The party included an open bar, open sushi bar and open burrito bar as well as many games. Raffle prizes for several lucky contestants included two Dell laptops and even a 40-inch flat screen TV.</p>
<p>I learned about Meebo’s impressive platform from Amanda, a four-year veteran of the industry, and Fergus, a director of revenue of the company. By 10:00 pm, the dance floor was jumping, the DJ was spinning oldies remixes and the lucky contestants who had won prizes were cautiously guarding their loot. Not even last night’s horrible weather detracted from Meebo’s fifth successful birthday party.</p>
