The product, Red Label, is billed as a complete, flexible solution that helps customers harness the Video Web and capitalize on the online video ad market.

Basically, blinkx will sell its search engine to third parties. The company will deploy/power its video search technology on customers’ sites (revenue will be garnered through advertising and split evenly). Implementing Red Label is free.

“Whether you’re launching a new Web site, or want to integrate rich media into an existing site, blinkx Red Label delivers a complete solution for your video needs,” said Suranga Chandratillake, founder and CEO, blinkx. “We offer immediate, up-to-date access to the Web’s largest index of top quality video in addition to the world’s most powerful video search technology, with fast, easy integration.”

blinkx uses patented conceptual search, speech recognition and visual analysis software to find online video. Red Label has access to 26 million hours of content from a variety of sites.

The company powers search for Ask.com, Lycos and Real Networks.

Under the agreement, Lycos will utilize Pixsy’s media search platform to offer video and image search to their network of owned and operated properties and affiliates.

Edward Noel, GM of search products for Lycos stated “We chose Pixsy for their robust multimedia search offering and deep index of the most popular consumer content on the web. This effort reflects our company-wide focus on providing Lycos users with a more visual-oriented, multi-media experience across all of our products and services.”

Lycos has announced the launch of its MIX tool, which the company declares to be the next step in its watch & chat technology.

Lycos MIX will enable groups of individuals to obtain video clips from a variety of different sites throughout the Internet and lodge them into one playlist, which the company hopes will foster communities of people sharing the same interests within one destination. Accordingly, users will be able to respond to content on the website with their own content and video collaborations, which Lycos hopes differs from sites that only offer videos alone.

Brian Kalinowski, chief operating officer for Lycos, Inc. states, “Lycos MIX continues the evolution of community and video with a true Web 2.0 collaborative, contributory and interactive social viewing experience. Unlike social networking sites, each MIX is a collection of video clips where users socialize around content, not individual people or profiles, creating combinations of lasting content to share with others. With Lycos MIX, users can create an amalgamation of video content where others participate by viewing, commenting and adding more clips.”

The MIX account is free and users have the option of having a public account, which would allow any other user to add a video clip to the MIX playlist. For users who want a bit more privacy, private accounts can be established, where the user has complete control over what videos are added.

Other features of MIX, which is compatible with PC, MAC and all supported Web browsers, include a “MIX It” bookmarklet feature, allowing users to add videos from other sites to their “MIXes” without cutting or pasting URL’s, as well as a permanent comment and rating system that allows users to rate whole video mixes versus individual video content.

Internet portal Lycos has signed the World Digital Music Group (WDMG) to provide the Lycos Cinema video viewing/chat community with content from WDMG’s Your Music Channel. The content deal will allow community members to interact with each other while viewing 30-minute episodes of “City Sessions,” Your Music Channel’s series that showcases recording sessions from indie musicians around the U.S.

“With Lycos Cinema, WDMG is able to build a mass audience for our ‘City Sessions’ bands, giving up-and-coming indie bands broad exposure worldwide without having to navigate the traditional record-label labyrinth,” said WDMG chief digital officer Brad Smith in a statement. According to Smith, WDMG wants to tap into Lycos’s 25 million monthly visitors, particularly the 13-24 year old demographic that frequents Lycos’s Angelfire service.

While watching each episode, users can chat with each other and purchase City Sessions DVD’s. WDMG and Lycos are sharing revenue from DVD sales and Lycos Cinema advertising.

Lycos Cinema allows both public and private VIP interactive viewing sessions, and its parent company plans to unveil additional music content for Cinema this year.

Internet portal Lycos UK has announced the launch of the new Lycos TV online video service.

When Lycos launches their own original video content, it will appear on the Lycos TV page alongside the news, music, movies, travel and sports-related video currently provided by the ROO online broadcasting B2B service. The web portal also plans to add support for user-generated content over the next few months.

“Our users demand an enriched web experience and moving to a comprehensive online video content service was the obvious place to start,” said Jeffrey Lee, Lycos UK’s managing director in a statement. “ROO’s technology meant that we could get a video portal up and running with a huge amount of video content available to users from the word go. However, it also provides us with a platform that we can use to add content from other partners, our own Lycos UK-generated content and which we will use as a platform for content generated by our community of users over time.”

Lycos is offering advertisers pre-roll spots, and will add new ad formats as the video service evolves.

The venerable online portal Lycos will be launching a combined online video/social networking service called Lycos Cinema to capture pieces of the markets held by News Corp’s MySpace and Google’s YouTube with the help of a new chat feature. Cinema will let Lycos users watch video and chat with their friends at the same time through its Screening Room platform, something that will also let video producers and marketers release video content to a pre-selected audience and get immediate feedback.

The Flash-based site only runs on Internet Explorer, and all uploaded video content is immediately wrapped in Microsoft’s Windows Media Rights Manager DRM.

“Our goal is to give users a totally unique viewing experience of high- quality video content they cannot find anywhere else,” said Lycos COO Brian Kalinowski in a statement. “Viewing video online becomes much more engaging and enjoyable when you can create a social experience involving friends and family. With LYCOS Cinema, we move from the flat, disconnected world of Web 1.0 to an all new world of social interaction around online video, essentially the next evolution of chat.”

Cinema users can host their own Screening Rooms, and invite whomever they wish to tune in. Hosts maintain complete control over the video as it plays, and can stop, rewind, and fast forward the video, and of course chat with the viewers. Rooms can also be password protected and invite-only.

Lycos is keeping content professional. Currently, the service houses around 1,000 classic, cult, and independent films, according to the Associated Press, and is negotiating for about 3,000 more, including popular film and TV content. Lycos is staying away from user-generated content for the time being because it considers user-generated content too difficult to monetize, since most advertisers want more control of the content in which their ads appear.

Venerable web portal Lycos has launched its new broadband multimedia search, powered by video search engine blinkx. Lycos’s 25 million visitors now have access to blinkx’s index of more than 5 million hours of TV, music video, vlog, and documentary video content. Instead of relying on keywords, blinkx uses speech and pattern-recognition technology to catalog online video files and provide better search results. Both companies will share revenue generated from video search results.

“As Lycos continues our push into building community around high-quality video content, giving users access to a best in class video search experience is critical,” said Lycos CEO Alfred Tolle in a statement. “By teaming up with blinkx, we now offer our LYCOS visitors one of the top video search engines available on the Web today.”

Lycos has been gradually adding more features for broadband users, adding a whole new broadband platform in July with video and other forms of entertainment. Both Lycos and blinkx want to emulate the TV experience on the Web.

Lycos Inc, the online portal that acquired Wired.com (Wired News) in 1999, has agreed to sell it back to Condé Nast, publishers of Wired magazine, Wired.com’s printed counterpart. Since 2005, CEO Alfred Tolle has been streamlining Lycos, turning it into a destination for entertainment, marketing and community building. While it’s been adding content partners like video provider PermissionTV, Lycos also been shedding some of the fat. In the 1999 deal, Lycos bought Wired.com for about $83 million, but now, Condé Nast is buying it back for $25 million.

The re-acquisition of Wired News has been a long-standing goal of Condé Nast, according to Wired editor Chris Anderson. And now that the digital and the print halves have been knitted back together again, the conjoined Wired property can get down to the business of innovation. “Wired’s focus on innovation and how technology is changing the world can now be matched with our own innovation and experimentation with new ways of doing media online,” said Anderson in a statement, “We’re bursting with ideas and can’t wait to put them into practice.”

Lycos is only selling properties related to Wired News and Wired.com. Lycos will keep other online properties obtained in 1999 like Hotbot, Hotwired and Webmonkey. Once the deal is solidified, Wired News will become part of CondéNet, Condé Nast’s web division.

ClickZ reveals that Lycos has signed on Internet television distribution platform PermissionTV as a technology provider for streaming video, progressive video downloads, and video advertising on its site. The addition of PermissionTV is a move to improve Lycos as a broadband audio and video entertainment destination. The platform allows Lycos to include updateable ads within downloadable video viewable through a desktop application. PermissionTV also enables in-stream ads within streaming video served from the Lycos site.

When users access the application, they are automatically connected to the PermissionTV system. Information is uploaded about which ads users have viewed and new ads replace the previously-downloaded content.

“Our intention is more to test the technologies…to test the new advertising models,” said Lycos COO Brian Kalinowski.

Advertisers can also link from a 30-second in-stream video spot to a video clip featuring more advertorial content, and the number of ads within the content will be determined on a case-by-case basis. “Our goal would be to make the advertising experience as non-interruptive as possible,” Kalinowski said.

Lycos is currently in talks with TV and movie studios to distribute branded TV shows and pilots, movies, indie films, and documentaries through PermissionTV. Videos currently available on the site include TV footage and movie trailers provided through partnerships with Broadband Enterprises and IFILM. Future viral and social components are also anticipated, with potential for video sharing, mash-ups, and virtual movie cinemas.

Kalinowski predicts that a full-blown implementation of the PermissionTV technology will occur mid-September, coinciding with the return of the college demographic to broadband connections offered on various campuses.

Blogging software developer Qumana, in cooperation with web portal Lycos have released a new desktop blog-editing tool that supports Qumana’s Q-Ads advertising network. The Lycos-Qumana Desktop Blog Editor allows bloggers to post entries to major blogging sites, including Lycos’s Tripod and Angelfire blogs. Integration with Qumana’s Q-Ads advertising program means that bloggers can manually insert relevant, keyword-specific ads directly into their posts.

“The Lycos-Qumana Desktop Blog Editor now gives you the ability to post to multiple blogs with just one click, extend your blogs further reaching more people, and make more money from your blog content,” said Lycos CEO Alfred Tolle in a statement. “With this new offering, Lycos continues to reinforce our strategy by offering content creators the tools needed to better showcase and market their independent content.”

The blogging tool also lets bloggers edit old posts, work off-line, post to multiple blogs at once, upload images, and check spelling. It complements Lycos’s existing blog building tool, Lycos BlogBuilder, which has been around since 2003. Qumana’s existing blog editing tools are used by bloggers around the world, and integrate tagging, multimedia insertion, and multiple blog postings in addition to Q-Ads.
