Video data takes up a lot of bandwidth and with better quality shows and movies available – for free – from more and more outlets, it seems like online video advertising should be set to hit the revenue mother lode.

But with ISPs out to limit bandwidth usage, the future is less than certain. eMarketer reports that online video advertising is expected to rake in $505 million this year – and up to $1.9 billion by 2011.

Local advertisers will be able to place standard display ads on Comcast.net (the portal for more than 14 million Internet subscribers) or Comcast’s automotive portal Vehix.com.

According to the Kelsey Group’s Local Video Forecast, online video ad revenues will increase to $1.5 billion by the end of 2012 — representing 11.6% of advertisers’ online budgets.

Mixpo’s platform consists of five components:

•	The VideoAd, a dynamic video advertising player that will play in 300×250 standard IAB units on Comcast properties and delivers high-quality video AND direct response lead generation capability.
•	The Studio, where companies can easily create high-quality VideoAds from existing video, photo, and audio files, from a broad range of stock media options;
•	Ad Rotation, which allows companies to test and compare different versions of a VideoAd for effectiveness;
•	The Dashboard, where clients measure how a VideoAd is performing by tracking the number of impressions and views, play-through and conversion, viewers’ geographic locations, and referring sites;
•	Automatically generated landing pages for each VideoAd, providing the search terms and other meta data to maximize exposure to more than 100 video sites powered by a range of search engines, including Google, Yahoo and Blinkx.

Comcast said that its new plan has been designed to give all users a fair share of bandwidth – and that it would only manage the traffic of bandwidth-hogging customers when the network was facing a traffic jam. To manage the heaviest users during peak times (about 1% of users), Comcast plans to create a second stream of traffic that will have lower priority compared with regular users.

The company said it plans to put the policy in effect by the end of the year. Comcast has more than 14 million high-speed Internet subscribers.

The FCC found that Comcast violated net-neutrality principles and ordered Comcast to stop stymieing peer-to-peer traffic. The lawsuit doesn’t reveal the content of the complaint; the company also issued a statement saying it planned to follow the FCC’s directive, but was only filing the suit to protect its legal rights and “challenge the basis the Commission found that Comcast violated federal policy in the absence of pre-existing legally enforceable standards or rules.”

Montgomery & Co. ran the bidding process (Viacom was also reportedly wrangling for the bubbly, female-focused newsletter). DailyCandy was snapped up for about $3 million in 2003 by Pilot Group Ventures.

Bob Pittman, head of Pilot Group Ventures, sent out a congratulatory missive to the newsletter’s staff that reads in part:

“I have been associated with the start-up, turnaround or acceleration of many companies and major brands, and rarely have I seen the kind of creativity, commitment and passion I’ve seen day in and day out at DailyCandy. And the results speak for themselves: since we made our investment in 2003, subscriptions have grown from just over 200,000 to over 2.5 million.”

The wildly popular Daily Candy is owned by Pilot Group Ventures, and has been the target of several acquisition rumors. But this one may hold water since Comcast has been on a digital acquisition binge of late (including most recently, social media site Plaxo).

If the agency does decide against the Internet provider, it would be an industry first.

Comcast got itself into hot water last Fall when it admitted that it slowed down (or blocked) some of its customers’ file transfers, consumer groups, net neutrality advocates and legislators complained, accusing the Internet provider of discriminating against especially prodigious Internet users.

Last night, FCC head honcho Kevin Martin told the Associated Press that he would recommend punishing Comcast, order an end to the file-blockage – and order Comcast to disclose how often it blocked usage and which customers were affected. Comcast would also have to come up with a plan to avoid slowing traffic in the future.

Net neutrality advocates Free Press said: “The F.C.C. now appears ready to take action on behalf of consumers. This is an historic test for whether the law will protect the open Internet. If the commission decisively rules against Comcast, it will be a remarkable victory for organized people over organized money.”

If the reports are accurate, and Comcast is punished, many observers are invoking the dreaded specter of pay-per-data-use charges that would surely reduce the online surfing time of even the most devoted Internet junkie (and of course, online ad revenue).

Google, Intel, Comcast, Time Warner, Sprint Nextel and Clearwire have all been named as investors – and the value of the deal has been put at about $14.5 billion. It will be operated by and known as Clearwire.

The network will speed up Internet access for mobile phone users – and it’s expected to deliver not just text, banners and Web pages, but video and sophisticated interactive advertisements as fast as cable.

Google announced that it invested $500 million in the deal on its official blog. Google will have a leading role in shaping Clearwire’s mobile Internet, and may end up being the default search engine on phones and other devices that are connected to the network.

“In addition to our $500 million contribution as part of the investment group, we will provide search and applications to the network’s users, and will work with Clearwire to offer additional services and applications,” Larry Alder, Google’s product manager wrote. “This will include jointly creating an open Internet protocol to work with mobile broadband devices (including Android-powered devices) and implementing other open network practices and policies.”

It’s unclear when the new Clearwire will be up and running, but some say it may happen as soon as two years from now. Current Clearwire chief Ben Wolff will run the new company.

ADOTAS — Cable operator Comcast Corporation agreed yesterday to change its practices in the wake of accusations that it impedes traffic to peer-to-peer sites. The move was a response to the Federal Communications Commission’s demands, but it looks like Comcast may not have gone far enough to please the powers that be.

Kevin Martin, the chairman of the FCC, said he would continue probing the management practices of broadband providers.

“I am pleased that Comcast has reversed course and agreed that it is not a reasonable network management practice to arbitrarily block certain applications on its network,” Martin said in a statement.

“While it may take time to implement its preferred new traffic management technique, it is not at all obvious why Comcast couldn’t stop its current practice of arbitrarily blocking its broadband customers from using certain applications,” he added.

Comcast said it would adopt a new capacity-management technique that will free up Internet file-sharing services that eat up bandwidth – it added that the company will not discriminate among different applications.

“We will have to rapidly reconfigure our network management systems, but the outcome will be a traffic management technique that is more appropriate for today’s emerging Internet trends,” Tony Werner, Comcast Cable’s chief technology officer, said in a statement.

Consumer groups and online companies claimed that Comcast blocked certain file-sharing services – such as BitTorrent and Vuze – in violation of the FCC’s 2005 net neutrality principles. In November, Comcast admitted that it slowed traffic to handle overwhelmed networks.

Comcast said it would work with BitTorrent and other companies to work out how far it could go in managing traffic issues and that a “protocol agnostic” system would be in place by the end of this year.
