Everyone is talking about Monty the Penguin.
Yesterday, John Lewis unveiled its latest festive advert “Monty’s Christmas“, featuring a young boy and what appears to be his pet penguin playing together in the lead up to Christmas Day to tune of a cover of John Lennon’s “Real Love.”After the success of last year’s Bear and the Hare animated ad, which attracted more than 10 million views on YouTube, the department store group has raised its game with the help of a CGI-animated penguin named Monty.
The 60-second film has been made by Adam&Eve/DDB, the agency that has created most of the department store’s commercials. According to the Guardian, the ad cost about £1m to make. A penny well spent as John Lewis has released 39 different pieces of new penguin merchandise linked to its £7million Christmas campaign, but much of it is selling out fast. Items including the Monty and Mabel pajamas, onesie, umbrellas and cufflinks are already sold out according to the retailer’s website.
