NEW YORK, March 27, 2014 (ADOTAS) — Online music streaming service Songza and The Weather Company, parent to The Weather Channel, announced today a new partnership that leverages comprehensive data from The Weather Channel to enhance Songza’s ability to deliver exactly the right music, based on what a user is doing or feeling at that moment. In addition to the day, time, device type, location and past behavior, Songza now uses weather data, provided by The Weather Channel, to better predict the “context,” or state of mind, a user is in and what music can be served to improve it.
Songza is built on the belief that the future of content is less about how you find things and more about how things find you based on your context. In addition to surfacing specific weather-related content to accompany, for example, a sunny stroll, stargazing on a clear night, or watching the sunset, the partnership will also allow Songza to understand and accommodate subconscious changes to people’s routines that are driven by relative changes in temperature, precipitation and more.
“Songza’s mission is to be everyone’s personal music concierge,” said Elias Roman (pictured), co-founder and CEO of Songza. “That kind of premium experience requires being excellent at two things: expert human content curation and algorithmic, data-driven anticipation of users’ content needs, so customers don’t have to work to find the perfect thing. With new data provided by The Weather Channel, we can more accurately predict your context, helping you enjoy more sunsets and weather more storms.”
“The Weather Channel has the world’s most comprehensive database of real-time global weather conditions,” said Mike Finnerty, senior vice president of platform products and distribution at The Weather Company. “Using our data to make an emotional connection to Songza’s users by dynamically recommending playlists is a perfect example of partnering to innovate in a really compelling way.”
Songza predicts what you’re doing or feeling and serves an expertly-curated playlist to make it better. We offer playlists for improving activities such as waking up, working out, commuting, concentrating, unwinding, entertaining, and sleeping. Songza’s team of 55 music experts is comprised of journalists, critics, DJs, ethnomusicologists and musicians, dedicated to delivering the soundtrack to our users’ lives. Songza was named one of the App Store Best of 2012 by Apple, one of Time’s Best Android Apps, iPhone Apps and Websites of 2013, one of Forbes “5 Companies That Transformed Advertising in 2013” and one of Fast Company’s 2013 Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in Music.
