ADOTAS — Thanks to Apple, the launch of every new generation in mobile phones has become an event. First a theatrical press conference, then a period of anticipation, finally the product in the hands of consumers and reviewers.  It’s a hype cycle orchestrated by the marketing departments followed by a reality dictated by the market itself.

Here are a few of the big takeaways:

  • While Samsung is chipping away at the iPhone’s market share, the iPhone is still dominating the online conversation, with nearly five times the volume of conversation in the 15 days with the onsale date in the middle.
  • The sentiment for all of the handsets except the Galaxy S4 dipped as the onsale date approached and recovered afterwards to varying degrees.  The Galaxy S4, though, rose right as the phone hit stores, then dipped for days before recovering.
  • Seven days after launch, the Blackberry 10 had the highest sentiment score overall and the biggest positive gain post-launch.
  • Though the sheer number of conversations about the iPhone was much higher than the others (higher than the others combined), it was the only phone where volume declined through the launch date.  The others got much more of a bump as the hardware hit the stores.
  • The demographic information would suggest that the iPhone is now mainstream – men, women, young and old – everyone seems to want or have an iPhone.  However, the 18-25 demographic is overwhelming most interested in the Galaxy S4, which suggests it’s now the “coolest” or “hippest” device on the market.
