SEOmoz Assembles Experts to Rank Organic Search Factors

ADOTAS – One hundred and thirty-two SEO experts argued and banged their heads together till they came up with SEOmoz’s 2011 Search Engine Ranking Factors. The new survey updates that methodology used in the 2009 study, including a correlation-based analysis featuring SEOmoz’s dissection of 10,271 Google keyword search results. As CEO Rand Fishkin explains, “Just because pages/sites with a given feature tend to rank higher doesn’t necessarily mean that this particular feature is the cause of that higher ranking.”

Doh! For more details on how the methodology has changed, check out this video from Fishkin, which just kind of made my head hurt, but that’s because I’m a lowly journalist, not an SEO pro.

Tied for most important ranking factor at 21% were page-level link metrics and domain-level link authority features. Receiving a solid 15% was page-level keyword usage, followed by domain-level keyword usage at 11%. Page-level traffic/query data and domain-level keyword agnostic features were the least influential factors, with respective rankings of 6% and 5%.

In addition, SEOmoz’s SEO experts opined on the future of organic optimization, with analysis of a page’s worth and social signals at both the page and domain levels registering as factors most likely to increase in importance. Effectiveness of paid links and exact keyword match domains were generally expected to decrease in importance for ranking.

There are tons more data back at SEOmoz, because I know how you SEO addicts yearn for stats and numbers and graphs, oh my!
