Brightcove Launches App Development Platform, Rebrands Video Services

ADOTAS - Brightcove has rebranded its video publishing and distribution service Video Cloud to complement new service App Cloud, a (you’ll never believe this: cloud-based) platform for building native mobile apps and touch websites for smartphones and tablets. Currently in private beta, platform is expected to be publicly available in the second half of this year.

To ease the development, distribution, management and monetization of mobile apps and websites, App Cloud employs an HTML5-based development model that incorporates automated app distribution, analytics, advertising and links to content management systems as well as online video platforms, photo-sharing services and custom cloud systems that support Brightcove’s API.

The open source platform allows developers to build templates with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript in conjunction with the App Cloud SDK. In addition, the SDK includes extensive libraries for accessing native device capabilities and enables cross-platform push notifications that can be based on geolocation. Finally, App Clouds analytics track installations, usage time and other key metrics.

“Delivering content apps across fragmented devices forces online publishers to choose between redundant one-off app development and cookie-cutter templates,” said Brightcove Chairman and CEO Jeremy Allaire. “App Cloud offers a new alternative with a platform that significantly streamlines the development and management of custom content apps across devices.”

Yesterday, Brightcove expanded its relationship with AOL Advertising.com Group’s 5min Media to allow Brightcove Pro and Enterprise edition users to easily publish content from 5min’s expansive library of premium video content, which the company noted can be quickly monetized.
