Analyzing Android Desire in GetJar’s Survey

ANDROIDADOTAS – When GetJar’s App Meter report appeared on Tuesday, a lot of media outlets hooked onto the stat that 41% of users surveyed said they would switch to Android for their next smartphone. I skipped over that information in my coverage — I thought interactive ad people would be more interested that despite all the reported howling, mobile users seem to be OK with ad-supported apps and games.

I also know that while GetJar’s app depot does have some iOS apps, its mainly known as a resource for other mobile platforms, with Android being the fastest growing one. So, no Virginia, a slew of iPhone users are not making the leap to Google’s mobile OS.

Only 18.2% of the global survey respondents were Android users, trailing Symbian users (31.7%) and Java — feature phone — users (23.7%); on GetJar’s platform, Android apps are the second-most submitted behind Java-based feature phone apps.

“The strength of Java and Symbian on GetJar is a legacy of our international business and particularly how strong our Asian business has become,” notes the executive summary of the App Meter report — GetJar was actually founded in Lithuania in 2004. About 35% of American GetJar users had Android devices, compared to 32% in Europe.

So 40.4% of the global users want an Android device as their next phone, compares to 17.9% that are interested in an iPhone. Following those two, 9.4% were going the Symbian way, 8.2% wanted BlackBerrys and 7.5% were entertaining thoughts about a Windows mobile OS. Considering that the Symbian OS is about to get replaced by Windows Phone 7 thanks to a Nokia-Microsoft partnership (or turkey-gathering, depending on your viewpoint), we can probably rack up 17% in Microsoft’s corner.

Getjar’s survey really suggests that the majority of non-iPhone users worldwide are twice as interested in the Android platform than the iOS for their next smartphone — breaking down GetJar’s research, a lot of the Android desire is coming from Asia. It would seem many global feature phone users are looking to Android for their first smartphone while Symbian users are considering crossing over. However, interest in Nokia devices powered by WP7 may generate as much interest as iPhones on the global front, which is sure to be music to Microsoft’s ears.
