Time Embraces Multiplatform Approach for Magazines

timeADOTAS – Time Inc. appears to be embracing multichannel strategies wholeheartedly when it comes to its cadre of print-based magazines.

Yesterday, Hewlett-Packard announced that Time was the exclusive magazine publishing partner of the forthcoming TouchPad, the Palm unit’s weapon in the tablet wars. Users of the tablet will be offered Time, Sports Illustrated and People subscriptions at the launch, while other Time magazines such as Fortune will arrive soon after.

Time also has introduced an “All Access” subscription plan for Sports Illustrated in conjunction with the SI app’s debut on Android tablets and smartphones. All Access subscribers will receive both print and app issues as well as web access to the issue via www.si.com/magazine for $48 annually or $4.99 a month. A digital-only edition is $3.99 a month, while current print subscribers will have access to the digital editions for the remainder of their current subscriptions.

SI has been on the forefront of Time’s digital magazine initiatives, as over the last eight months it has introduced a magazine iPad app, the HTML5-coded SI Snapshot for Google Chrome and an SI Facebook fantasy football game.

“We are in the first inning of development and with this new, expanded commerce infrastructure we can ensure that our readers will be able to enjoy their favorite titles across an array of digital platforms and devices as the game unfolds,” said Randall Rothenberg, who Time recently installed as EVP/Chief Digital Officer.
