Facebook Boosts Search With Categories

facebook_small.jpgADOTAS - Google’s social additions to its search drew a lot of media attention both for what was now included (Twitter, Flickr and Bloggr!) and what was noticeably absent (ahem, [Facebook]). Facebook has already displaced Google as the site users spend the most time on, and as complaints about SEO-ed junk content gumming up Google’s search results grow louder, many searchers are turning to the no. 1 social network.

Many people I mention this to ask , “How do you search on Facebook? Don’t you just use Facebook search to find a friend and maybe a fan page?” Nope — you can use Facebook search to find out what your friends are sharing, especially regarding current issues.

Facebook has silently made searching far more intuitive by categorizing results by labels such as “apps,” “shared posts,” “pages” and “people.” The top results appear organized by category — I used British band Radiohead as a test subject since my friends wouldn’t shut up about their new album last week:

When you click to see more results, the “shared posts” section includes the original posts plus the ability to view all comments made. Finally, Bing web results show up at the bottom of the page.

Very cool — and likely to give Google some serious heartburn.

Reader Comments.

You have struck a very deep chord. All of that money spent on finding the right words to be found when someone does a google search has contaminated a lovely idea. When I search, I need a quick list that has what I need. Instead, I get too much to check out. I’ll have to try facebook.
