Greenpeace Spills Oil All Over the Web
ADOTAS – So I want to apologize about the oil everywhere — apparently a Greenpeace tanker crashed into Adotas.com and spilled its virtual cargo all over the site.
I got a message this morning saying someone had “BP’d” on me — via a social media application created Vanksen, Greenpeace is encouraging user to virtually spill oil on websites and Facebook profiles. “It is an unprecedented move for Greenpeace to promote, rather than prevent, a giant oil spill, while only online,” the release read. But the idea is to keep awareness of rig safety issues high after the seemingly unpluggable BP oil spill in the gulf last year.
Of course, it’s a wonderfully juvenile way to do it (the squirting sounds are YUCKY!) — I hope John at AdExchanger doesn’t mind I squirted oil all over his website. It comes right up, I swear! I also hit a few friends, who are invited to counter-attack after you post the damage on their page.
All sophomoric behavior aside, it’s really an impressive campaign — Vanksen has outdone itself in raising awareness to a serious issue via social gaming. This is what social media marketing about — creating a fun way to engage consumers about even the most pertinent (or boring) subjects. Beyond activism, it shows the huge potential inherent in both social networking and social gaming.
Even the tagline “Spill, baby, spill!” had me chuckling — who knew environmental disasters could be so much fun?
