Google Me Social Network Just a Fantasy

google_recruiting_small.jpgADOTAS – Over the summer, the eyes of tech journalists and disgruntled Facebook users sparkled with anticipation as rumors circulated that Google was furiously developing our social networking salvation: “Google Me”. No longer would our social sharing be subject to the tyranny of Zuck — Google was freeing us from our Facebook shackles!

Alas, speaking at the Monaco Media Forum, Google’s Product Management Director Hugo Barra confirmed there is no such thing as Google Me — Google is not building a standalone, Facebook-rivaling, “traditional” social network. He also mentioned that the Easter Bunny is not real and your parents actually left all those gifts you thought were from Santa Claus/Hanukkah Harry/Kwanza Kwame.

However, just like in the aforementioned examples of make-believe, you should have figured that out for yourself before Barra burst the bubble. In September CEO Eric Schmidt suggested that instead of a social network, Google would simply socialize its core components — hopefully not in the same fashion as Google Buzz. That method would make more sense, especially since Facebook suddenly seems to be threatening Gmail.

Barra also commented that Google Me is an awful name, but TechCrunch’s Robin Wauters quips that it’s better than Orkut. ZING!

Still unanswered, however, is what Google is up to with Zynga, which the search giant has been quietly funding… What’s the deal with “Google Games“?
