RIM’s App World to Enter Cellmania

app.jpgADOTAS – Though it’s brightest Torch hath been doused in cold water, BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion isn’t throwing in the smartphone towel yet — and why should it when 35% of smartphone users are hooked up via BlackBerrys? Far smarter, RIM is using acquisitions to boost its App World app store — as Wired recently explained, apps are where it’s at.

RIM signed a deal to purchase mobile storefront operator Cellmania, which boasts T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T and Virgin Mobile among some of the names on its mFinder client list.

mFinder provides mobile content delivery and app store infrastructure for theses carriers for feature phones. Thus RIM could use such infrastructures, as well as payment collection and developer application systems, to revamp its app store. In addition, RIM has been sniffing around at ad networks such as Millennial Media, considering an acquisition to encourage monetization-hungry app developers to look BlackBerry’s way.

Cellmania reported that it would continue to work with outside clients. Interestingly enough, RIM just rehauled its App World a few days ago…
