Media Mixers: Affiliates Heat Up Antarctica

ADOTAS – Free pizza and beer? I’m there — even if “there” is Antarctica!

A hundred or so participants of Linkshare’s Symposium East 2010 enjoyed the way cool atmosphere of the Antarctica bar on the corner of Spring and Hudson Streets in Tribeca. Missy Ward and Shawn Collins of Affiliate Summit generously sponsored a reception serving Lombardi’s Pizza and an open bar.

I discussed the challenges of international affiliate marketing with Anna Lawler of DirectAgents. Several slices later, Danny Giardullo of Datran Media shared some insight with me about NetMargin, Datran Media’s performance network.

I enjoyed a Jack and Coke and learned about trade show marketing with Mark Jacoby of Astoria, NY based Overflow Marketing Communication. I tipped my bartender and left, happy to have made some new friends in the world of affiliate marketing.

• Right now, at the beginning of 2012, what are you watching the most closely for its ad and marketing opportunities?

  • Mobile. Smart devices have become standard, and advertising is only going to become more creative there.
  • Online video. It's a real competitor to TV now, and it presents really interesting ways to engage viewers.
  • Social media. The new Facebook timeline and the surge of Google+ have cracked the game wide open again.
  • Tempting as it might be, I don't want to get too involved in one aspect.
  • See, I think this might be a good time to see what would happen if we revisited MySpace, but made the ads slightly bigger... with more strobe effect.
