Google Opens Retargeting to the AdWords Masses

target_small.jpgADOTAS – After a year in beta, Google is bringing remarketing to the AdWords masses, allowing all advertisers to reconnect with users perusing the Google Content Network, including YouTube channels.

Launched to around 500 advertisers last March with the beta launch of the interest-based advertising targeting tools, now all AdWords users can take advantage of the new audiences tab and reach visitors who left their sites without converting. Remarketing campaigns offer the same features and reports as all other AdWords campaigns

As Google has been beefing up its display offering, this step seems kind of like catch-up — Yahoo!, Advertising.com and numerous other networks have offered retargeting for years.

This announcement can only mean good things for advertisers and consumers alike. Retargeting, if used properly, can help advertisers better target their audience and manage their campaigns much more efficiently, while consumers will now be exposed to promotions and discounts for products that they’re interested in and can actually use. It’s a win-win. And retargeting isn’t new, it’s just new to Adwords. The fact that Google is now utilizing this marketing technique just validates that it works.

At last I hear a few people say.. The fact that Google have only just got re targeting capabilities is nothing against the stats that say over 50% of marketing folk don’t use re targeting strategies.

Retargeting has been around for ages as well and most marketeers just don’t use it for some reason.

Wrote a piece on it here for everyone to read.

AdRocket’s Search Retargeting, thouhg somewhat different, has had great results for advertisers and publisher revenues, so I think this will be a boon for Google. its smart that they tested and tweaked it for a year, now rolled out, should be fairly solid.

Unlike other networks Google’s retargeting combines with it’s presence at the lower end of the funnel will allow it to measure the effectiveness of the ads on the upper end of the funnel. This can really change the web as we know it. http://www.yanivnizan.com/2010/03/google-adwords-retargeting-feature-will-change-the-face-of-the-web.html

Retargeting definitely has the potential to really catch on quickly. Sure, it’s been around for a few years, but it’s remained under the radar – until now. The concept of retaining the interest of those already interested in your product is a great idea. I just wanted to add that it essential to take the right approach to any retargeting campaign. Here’s an interesting article that talks about the right approach and the… well, “creepy” approach. http://bit.ly/aqE6hs)
