Being Social Can Give You Viruses… New Scare

ADOTAS – McAfee Inc. has come out with some bad news for Facebook users. Not that Facebook users are strangers to let downs when it comes to the most popular social networking site ever created. The anti-virus software firm put out a statement that many hackers have sending virus-riddled spam in an attempt to steal sensitive personal information including banking passwords.

The email that users will receive will say their passwords have been reset and ask them to click on an attachment, which once clicked on, will infiltrate the user’s computer with malicious software. How this current attack campaign is different than past hacker excursions, is that users are getting these emails in their normal inboxes, not their message inboxes on the site.

McAfee claims that tens of millions of emails have been sent out throughout the United States, Asia and Europe since Tuesday. McAfee’s director of malware research and communications, Dave Marcus said, “With Facebook as your lure, you potentially have 400 million people that can click on the attachment. If you get 10% success, that’s 40 million.”
