Zynga Tightens Social Gaming Grip With Serious Business Acquisition

zyngasADOTAS – Are we on the cusp of a big social gaming consolidation? Farmville-maker Zynga has acquired Serious Business, the developer of Facebook apps such as Friends for Sale and Rock Legends.

It appears to be one of these newfangled aqui-hire deals — Serious Business employees are moving into Zynga’s offices in San Fransisco, including founders and Powerset vets Alex Le and Siqi Chen.

With a reported 235 million users playing games such as Farmville and Mafia Wars, it’s hard to deny that Zynga is the leader in the Facebook social game space — it’s raised $219 million in funding, even if some of it was from shady Russians. Acquiring rivals certainly sends the signal that “We’re #1!”

Besides, Zynga needs some new products because eventually the peasants, I mean users, will get sick of Farmville — right? Tell me the human race has hope…
