Gmail Dives Deeper Into the Social Stream (UPDATED)

google_recruiting_small.jpgADOTAS – UPDATE: The new features have a name: Google buzz.

Once the wallflower in the social mediascape, Gmail is upping its social ante by adding status update streams for users, similar to the ones found on Twitter and Facebook.

Sources told The Wall Street Journal that new features to be introduced later this week will allow users to view a stream of status updates from their connections, not just the current one as the system currently allows.

In addition, the service will also integrate shared content from YouTube and its Picasa photo-sharing service into status updates.

So is Google trying to push Gmail as a social networking rival to Twitter and Facebook? Bold move…

Reader Comments.

I don’t care for this idea. Gmail is my email of choice and my email is a private tool. Now I have to worry that my emails become public or that I have to set a privacy setting.

So far I don’t have any real problem with Google Buzz.

But whatever happened to Google’s “SocialStream” friend networking site that they developed about 3 years ago and everyone was raving about it being a serious contender to Facebook?
