Americans Text $8 Million in Aid to Haiti
ADOTAS – It would take the coldest of hearts not to feel for the people of Haiti after a monstrous earthquake claimed as many as 50,000 souls. The tragedy continues as food and potable water has been in short supply but aid is coming — via text messages.
Beyond celebrities hosting telethons and giving large amounts of aid, everyday people have been able to chip in through the State Department’s “Text Haiti” campaign. When a U.S. mobile user texts “Haiti” to 90999, $10 is donated to the Red Cross; the amount will appear on the user’s phone bill.
As of this morning, a White House spokesman reported that $8 million in aid have been collected through the system. The government has further encouraged giving through social media campaigns on Facebook and Twitter. In addition, several other text-to-give campaigns push donations to Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti and the United Way among other organizations.
Perhaps the only bright spot in this horrific event is that it has widely exhibited the remarkable charitable applications of mobile tools and social networking. However, GigaOm points out that because text-to-give is still in its infancy, many donations are delayed for 90 days.

Are you folks just stupid? Hey it is great that you want to give that $10 BUT……doing it by texting is WRONG. You see, you are now signed up for premium text service at $9.995 a month. Watch the next bill…..what a hoax these people are!
What a fitting name you have “Head in Sand”. You comment comes across as that of someone who opts not to help those in Haiti. Explain to me, if you will, how have you helped? No, we are not stupid. We are compassionate, we are sympathetic, we are apart of a united front to help those in dire straits. So what if we are signed up for some mysterious package, we can cancel at anytime. Always a “hater” lurking, wouldn’t you agree, Rush!
