Snowpocalypse Boosts Online Holiday Sales

shoppingcart.jpgADOTAS – For those of us who are willing to admit our penchant for schadenfreude — ahem, Carol? — the weekend before Christmas offered some hilarious visuals on the East Coast via the local news.

If you didn’t know, the Eastern Seaboard was shellacked with on average 20 inches of snow the other weekend — we all knew it was coming, but some people who I’m sure considered themselves savvy at the time thought they could beat the shopping crowds by forging their way to mall despite winter’s worst. Well, many made it only to be snowed-in at the mall parking lot, a fate some could consider far worse than death. Of course, local news crews were there to capture the agony.

The rest of us watched the snow fall comfortably wrapped in a blanket (possibly a Snuggie) and ordering gifts online. Thus, comScore noted a 13% growth year over year in online spending the week before Christmas. The full week witnessed a 6% jump with $4.8 billion in spending, which set a one-week record.

In total, holiday spending online bounced back 5% after last year’s lackluster season, with a 3.5% increase between Black Friday and Christmas Eve. Consumer electronics was the big winner with a 20% growth in sales online. Between Nov. 1 and Dec. 24, an estimated $27 billion was spent on holiday shopping online.

Reader Comments.

I personally contributed to the increased growth in sales online. Glad my shopping counted.
