Google Wants Yelp With Its Roar
ADOTAS – Mobile, display and now local business — Google is making it no secret that it wants to dominate everything. On a acquisition roll that includes AdMob and Teracent, Google is now trying to scoop up local review site Yelp for something above $500 million, sources close to the deal told TechCrunch.
It would be a wise play on Google’s part as the company has recently launched several initiatives to entice local business, including Google-branded labels in storefront windows and a slew of new features on profile pages. Yelp, claims its monthly unique visitors is 25 million, would buoy these efforts as an already trusted resource for businesses and consumers.
Although Yelp is the biggest in the space, beating out rival Citysearch in funding and visitors, other offerings are popping up in the sector. Recently Thumbtack.com launched after a year in private development, boasting search, comparison, booking and concierge services.

Yes.. Google is in the run big time. They are after display and plan to own
that piece as well. They made a first move with Teracent..and will now go after the ad targeting
or the data targeting companies to complete their offering. Ill bet we see companies like PEER39 (semantic targeting), Bluekai or Exelate (BT) being
Fold into google quickly as well.
It will be interesting
I’m usually not for Google buying up everything, but in this case I’m behind it. Yelp takes down good reviews and leaves the lousy ones up. If Google owns them, they’ll have to play the game correctly..
