Appsaurus Encroaches on Genius’ Turf

app.jpgADOTAS – No one spins the hits like DJ Little g (that would be me), hence why I’ve never turned on the iTunes Genius. Fool, I know what tracks go best together — we’re gonna hit up some Jawbox after that Afghan Whigs classic! (There’s not a lot of dancing at my parties.)

However, the Genius feature for Apple’s App Store is a far more useful tool considering the 120,000-plus apps on display. Well, it should be more useful — Genius analyzes the apps already installed on your iPhone and makes some “bland” recommendations, according to Wired’s Brian X. Chen.

So here’s Appsaurus, which instead profiles a user on his or her favorite apps and develops a list of preferences. It also features a custom search to narrow the hunt using the aforementioned preferences.

No surprise, Appsaurus has limitations: it can’t determine which apps you already have, which means manual insertion (the horror!), and it can’t access app ratings and reviews. Still the design, including pull-down summaries and screenshots, has got techies like Chen raving.
