Turkey smacks Google with huge fine for unpaid taxes

google_recruiting_small.jpgADOTAS – Ouch — did it leave a mark when they slapped that fine on you? After a year-long investigation, the Turkish government has charged Google the equivalent of $47 million for dodging national taxes. Allegedly the Internet giant has racked up $50 million in unpaid taxes.

The government claims it’s owed because Google runs its online advertising business in the country and operates a subsidiary there. Google is not sheepishly drawing a check, of course — the company argues that its European ad operations are actually manned in Ireland and it does not owe taxes simply for operating a subsidiary.

However, Google may have made a costly mistake when establishing its Turkish subsidiary. A Turkish lawyer tells TechCrunch that Google set up a full-fledged company instead of a “liaison”; the latter type of operation would have encountered little to no taxes.

Google said it’s in negotiations with Turkish authorities and maintained that it follows the tax laws of every country in which it has operations. Or at least it tries to..
