Maybe the kids aren’t social media-dependent…
ADOTAS – What’s wrong with these kids today? They’re addicted to their Facebooks and Myspaces! You can’t pry them off these social media sites with a crowbar — and trust us, we’ve tried with bloody results.
A recent survey of college students dually coordinated by the Participatory Marketing Network and Pace University’s Lubin School of Business’ IDM Lab discovered that students on average spend 33 hours on social media sites. However, when asked if they could go a week without it, only 9% said death would be a better option. Well, they said they couldn’t live without it, which sorta means the same thing….
However, 26% respectively said they really couldn’t make it without email or text messaging. Students reported spending 31 hours using email, which makes the social media number seem less impressive. A higher percentage of students (15%) even said TV was more essential than social media sites.
Michael Della Penna, PMN co-founder and executive chairman, summed it up well: “As long as email remains the collection point for social networking updates, including alerts around new followers, discussion updates and friend requests, it will remain a powerful force in marketing and our lives.”
Reader Comments.
The key part of that study is in the question. They were only asked which medium/touchpoint that they could go a week without. Now, if they were asked which they would give up permanently and we got those responses… then you’d have something.
Also, was texting and emailing really combined? Because they really should have been separated out. “kids” live on their phones…
