Google to aid U.K.’s ASA in regulating online marketers

outlawsmall.jpgADOTAS – All right, Internet marketing bad boys — there’s a new sheriff online in the U.K. that goes by the name ASA (Advertising Standards Authority), and it’s carrying a loaded six-shooter known as “The Google.”

The ASA has the authority to keep digital advertising — email marketing, viral videos and banner ads, in particular — in line, but until recently marketers’ own websites were a Wild West where any loony claim could be made. This varmintry was stretching over to the townships of blogs and social media.

Though the details are still hazy, Google will provide funding for the lawkeeping though it’s not clear what else. Rumor has it that the company’s been talked into this duty to avoid being regulated against itself.

More details will come public in the upcoming weeks and regulation is scheduled to go into effect in the second half of 2010.
