ad:tech NYC: Bring on the heavy hitters
Start spreading the news:
I’m leaving Tuesday –-
I want to be a part of it:
ad:tech New York….
Okay, maybe not what Ol’ Blue Eyes had in mind, but nevertheless, it’s back — ad:tech in New York City. A little new flavor this year — not during NYC Marathon weekend and not at the Hilton! This is ad:tech’s first go-around the Jacob K. Javits Center, the glass goliath known as the “Marketplace for the World.”
I know a lot of us are very familiar with the Hilton New York and we’ve gotten used to doing business at the Lobby Lounge or the Bridges Bar. We’ve even gotten used to having to take three elevator banks to get to our destination, but ya gotta admit – the exhibition hall has gotten a little too close for comfort. I think the fire marshal got lost in there last year, so off to bigger and better things at the Javits!
I’m writing this on Thursday night, and as I watch Jeter up against Pedro in the bottom of the seventh inning, I notice that ad:tech has its own big hitters as keynotes this year. Wednesday morning, Sir Martin Sorrell, chief executive at WPP, tells us what’s coming down the line. On Thursday, Jonathan Miller, chief digital officer at News Corp., speaks to ad:tech’s Drew Ianni to discuss the future of digital advertising. And on Friday, Jimmy Wales from Wikipedia talks about how rapidly emerging and high-quality community-generated content will effect consumer behavior and communication.
Seeing the Yankees up 3-1 at the top the eighth with Rivera on the bag reminds me that there’s also a little baseball series going on. Game 6 is on Wednesday night and Game 7 on Thursday, and I believe the Knicks are in town as well. Hopefully I can catch up with Spike Lee about that data deal we got going on. There are also some parties — what’s ad:tech without a few “networking opps”?
On Tuesday night, XY7.com is holding their popular “No Bull” Party at Johnny Utah’s — home of the only mechanical bull in New York City! Show up to this one and you might see yours truly riding El Toro….
Wednesday night seems to be full of things to do, starting with Gevalia and Fosina Marketing Group’s cocktail party at The Gates. Azoogle & Epic Ads is throwing a bash also, as well as Profinity — but I don’t have the info on these events. These two are probably invite-only, so start working with the sponsors.
Moss Networks’ VIP Mix Mingle event is also on Wednesday at the Hudson Terrace. This swanky event is sponsored by Adknowledge, Advertise.com, and GenieKnows.com. The big event of the evening is Headlines & Heroes’ “Money Makers 3” Party at Pacha, featuring Slick Rick and DJ Steve Powers. This event is sponsored by Clickbooth, GlobalWide Media, Snackable Media, Bootcamp Media, Pinnacle Dream Media, Atrinsic Interactive, Rossi Marketing Group, The Keller Network, Infinite Traffic and Seed Corn Advertising.
I haven’t heard much about Thursday night — I guess it’s meant for us to catch the Yanks in Game 7. I also heard about some “fun committee” with some super-secret party going on — someone please get me the 411 if you find out. Also, please keep in mind that some of these events are open to anyone, but some are invite only — so if you can’t get into one of the aforementioned parties, you need to start doing business with the sponsors!
So now that we’ve talked about some events this week, I’ve got Amber Paul from AKMG helping me out discussing what to do and what not to do during ad:tech09 New York… take it away, Amber!
“Make sure to put together a nice itinerary with all your meetings and flight schedules – JFK isn’t that accommodating if you show up for your flight 6 hours late.
“Weather is supposed to be in the mid-50s throughout the week — so no need for the huge parka and jacket with a hood made of endangered Eskimos, unless you are going for the ‘traffic gangsta’ look.
“As Warren can attest to, make sure to RSVP for every party you are invited to. There is nothing worse than not being able to get into a party and having your clients ditch you to go hang out with your competitor because they are actually cool enough to get into the party.
“Cash: Make sure you have plenty of small bills for cabs, bartender tips, adventures to meet Warren’s friends, and save the bigger bills for bribing bouncers when your boss starts behaving badly.
“In case you didn’t know — Scores is not a sports bar.
“Bring two forms of identification: Save yourself the cavity search at the airport because you lost your ID after you rode the bull at the XY7 party.
“Make sure to keep your phone charged at all times – I missed a lot of last-minute parties from having a dead phone, and ended up in Brooklyn because I couldn’t get the right address from anyone.
“For the ladies: seriously — make sure to bring your best eye cream and makeup. There’s nothing worse than ending up on someone’s blog for the World Wide Web to see when you look like you have been out drinking for 48 hours, even if you really haven’t been — it’s not a look you want captured.
“Try and pace yourself throughout the nights of free booze – even if you don’t remember the stupid comments you made or your awful dance moves, I promise you at least 20 other people will.
“If you are at a club and a ton of girls come out with champagne bottles and sparklers while playing ‘The King is Here’ — you are definitely in the right spot for the evening.
“If you’re hanging out with anyone from [a certain company], don’t wear your most expensive shirt because at the end of a long night you might
end up looking like you lost a fight with a paper shredder.
“Save yourself the trouble and don’t make any Facebook uploads while completely intoxicated — even if your family understands that you’re in affiliate marketing. They probably won’t understand why so many of your clients appear to be half naked on a Tuesday night.
“Make sure you have plenty of mints and gum — I don’t care how many shots your affiliate manager made you take — don’t torture everyone else with your bar breath.
“Ladies — try and watch your steps while walking the streets of Manhattan in four-inch heels. There are a ton of pot holes and uneven grounds that make for some colorful bruises when mixed with a few Patron shots. (Not that I know from experience)
“Don’t judge a book by its cover — it’s usually the guys in the super flashy suits and MASSIVE watches that have no idea what’s going on, while the super affiliates are the guys that have a sweatshirt on and resemble the guy you tripped over sleeping on the sidewalk last night while trying to buy a hot dog at 3:00 a.m.
“Keep Visine handy the next morning — I have been called out a few times because my eyes looked like a red and green kaleidoscope mixed in with a few pieces of white. Hey, at least I showed up to the booth on time.
“I don’t care what the W Hotel says — they will not always do what you ask ‘whenever and wherever’ — even if you are the VP of an affiliate marketing firm, so don’t try… even if you are just trying to ‘take care of your clients.’
Wow, Amber — that was a very comprehensive list! Thanks for your help, because most of those examples are foreign to me. And folks, I’m sure Amber would want me to tell you to visit the AKMG booth, #1734 — it’s the company with the cool skateboards.
Well, Game 2 is over and the Series goes to Philly all tied up. I’ve got my Halloween costume ready and my orange-and-blue set for the Gators on Saturday. Enjoy the rest of the Series, have safe travels to New York, and Amber and I will see you in the City!
