Advertisers Flock to Social Networks and Blogs in Record Numbers

rocket1.jpgADOTAS – Nielsen has come out with a new report that shows 17% of all time online last month was spent on social networking and blogging sites. Jon Gibs, VP of media and agency insights for Nielsen’s online division stated “This growth suggests a wholesale change in the way the Internet is used. While video and text content remain central to the Web experience — the desire of online consumers to connect, communicate and share is increasingly driving the medium’s growth.”

As a result, the Online Display Ad Spending on Top Social Network Sites More than Doubles in Aug. 2009 year-over-year, estimated the ad spend on social networks and blogging sites increased a staggering 119% from $49 million in Aug. 2008 to $108 million in Aug. 2009.

While many industries have decreased their spend overall, social networking sites have seen the bulk of that remaining spend. The Entertainment Industry top the chart of big spenders, followed the Travel Industry.

Gibs continued by saying, “In the past, advertisers had significant concerns with social media advertising. The considerable increases we;Ve seen in ad spending over the past year suggest that many of these concerns have subsided or been addressed.”
