Facebook glimpse into the apocalpyse

explosion.jpgADOTAS — Reductio ad absurdum.

The logically absurd is the only place left when it comes to the effect social networks can have on young people. Despite the paltry evidence that social networks lead to narcissism, stupidity, insanity or, in the worse case, teen suicide, the misconception continues. Even the Catholic Church is getting into the act.

The leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, Westminster Archbishop Vincent Nichols says he is “worried that teenagers are developing “transient” relationships on the internet and he warns the collapse of the friendships could leave young people feeling suicidal.”

“Friendship is not a commodity, friendship is something that is hard work and enduring when it’s right,” he told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. “I think there’s a worry that an excessive use, or an almost exclusive use of text and emails means that as a society we’re losing some of the ability to build interpersonal communication that’s necessary for living together and building a community.”

Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, et al. are either a new way of communicating with large groups of people that we never had the opportunity to meet before or keep in contact with. Or like the Four Horsemen of the Apocalpyse, they are a sign that we are at the beginning of the end. Or, you know, maybe something less dramatic.

Reader Comments.

I’ll go with the new way of communicating. I think that if/when there is a sign of the Apocalpyse there won’t be any doubt about what that is.

Social media allows contact between like minded individuals & businesses without any geographic & demographic limitations. That is a good thing & not a sign of the end. Maybe a sign of a new beginning…

How can men who are not allowed to marry, do not have children and allow sexual abuse amongst it’s staff comment on how to raise young minds. Sorry God, John

Former catholic,
As a former Catholic, I respect and understand you’re opinion. But I would rather hear his opinion then silence it. A major problem with the church was a code of omerta. So let’s debate the future not the past.
