YouTube wins; singer wins; but what about video creator

youtube_small.jpgADOTAS — In the now flood of public relations posts and good publicity, YouTube is now pointing to a user generated content victory.

A goofy (somewhat long) wedding video went viral. The video, set to ‘Forever’ singer Chris Brown, has had more than 12 million hits, and the song’s rights holders were able to monetize the song, by running Click-to-Buy links over the video, giving viewers the opportunity to purchase the music track on Amazon and iTunes.

According to YouTube, the click-through rate on the “JK Wedding Entrance” video is 2x the average of other Click-to-Buy overlays on the site. In the last week, over a year after its release, the song rocketed up the charts, reaching as high as #4 on the iTunes singles chart and #3 on Amazon’s best selling MP3 list.

Now, of course, my first reaction was, is this ‘the Chris Brown’? Who got caught beating his then-girlfriend Rihanna and then pleaded guilty? Ok then. But what about the people who created and posted the video? Do they get a piece of the pie? I assume not. So the people who wrote the song get paid, but not the people who created the video. How long will that last?
