IPhone ties to AT&T could be rent asunder

IphoneADOTAS — I have not hidden my feelings about Apple’s commitment to AT&T.

I understand it of course. The first day the new Apple iPhone 3GS went on sale was the biggest sales day ever for AT&T. One million iPhone 3GS were sold in the first weekend. So I get that if it works,  a company shouldn’t break it. Unless your part of the federal government.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Department of Justice has begun a review to determine whether large U.S. telecom companies such as AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. have abused the market power they’ve amassed. Among the areas the Justice Department could explore is whether wireless carriers are hurting smaller competitors by locking up popular phones through exclusive agreements with handset makers, the WSJ said. In recent weeks lawmakers and regulators have raised questions about deals such as AT&T’s exclusive right to provide service for Apple Inc.’s popular iPhone in the U.S.

Now I hate AT&T, and even if I could/wanted to break out of my contract with Verizon, I wouldn’t. Verizon works better for me. If and when the iPhone allows Verizon in, I’ll be, or at least try to be, the first in line. Having said that, the federal government should stay out of this. Is the iPhone the only one in the market? No. It’s the best. Is it likely that iPhone will move to open up to other carriers? Yes, it will. It should hardly be on the front burner for anti-trust concerns.

Reader Comments.

Why not have the government involved? If I were AT&T I would do whatever it took to hold on to the iPhone, and control the terms of the agreement. The invisible hand doesn’t always help the consumer.
