Deep packet inspection’s quiet success

privacy11.jpgADOTAS — NebudAd is a prime example of a deep packet inspection company gone bad.

It used technology that allowed it to capture consumers’ online behavior, without prior approval, by looking at the traffic that passes through their ISP and that caused a public and federal backlash. But that hasn’t stopped DPI technology from flourishing elsewhere, according to the Wall Street Journal.

“DPI is going to disappear as a stand-alone thing and get folded into other types of technology,” David Vorhaus, an analyst with the Yankee Group research firm, told the WSJ. “Because of the public image, it’s become increasingly difficult to market — but not to sell.”

Despite privacy concerns, DPI is gaining favor as a tool to combat viruses and make networks run more efficiently. In a survey by Yankee Group and RCR Wireless News of top-tier communication-services providers, 77% of respondents said they were either strongly or somewhat interested in DPI, according to results of a survey last year by Yankee Group and RCR Wireless News. Most said they wanted it to improve network security.
