Media That Matters Film Festival

sva.jpgADOTAS — Internet week is wrapping up and this time around I was given the privilege to attend the Media That Matters Film Festival.

Over 500 submissions were reviewed for the evenings event, which ended up being pared down to twelve, diverse shorts spanning from narratives to experimental to documentaries on socially relevant issues.

After running the slick blocks to avoid the rain, I came to the glowing red marquee of The School of Visual Arts and a bustling lobby filled with filmmakers, press, activists and other enthusiasts. People were networking, munching on Luna bars and checking out a couple of related companies at the display tables. POV, an organization that facilitates events for documentaries; MercyCorp, a global development and services organization and Miro (in conjunction with Creative Commons) an open-source video sharing platform were amongst those displaying their materials and creating dialogues.

The films covered an array of issues from immigration to the impacts of global warming and inner city violence action and education. My personal favorites were “The Secret Life of Paper,” a short about the impact of America’s exorbitant paper consumption, “La Hoja,” a documentary about the US war on drugs and the challenges it brings to Bolivian traditions and “The Next Wave,” an eye-opening documentary about a group of indigenous Pacific Islanders struggling to relocate as their island is being submerged as an effect of global warming.

The night was provocative, entertaining and seamlessly organized. I would urge anyone interested in social issues or using art to bring attention to such subjects to attend the next Media The Matters Film Festival and check out any of the films from this year’s festival.
