Bing better, will still lose to Google

bing_small.jpgADOTAS — Users prefer Microsoft’s search engine’s visual design and believe it’s slightly better in organization and refinement options, according to the Catalyst Group.

But even with a $100 million marketing campaign, and despite some positive factors in Bing’s favor, users thought that both search engines produced equally relevant results, the study said. Overall, most users stated they would continue using Google over Bing and were unlikely to switch. Users said Bing feels warmer and more inviting than Google, Bing’s initial search result gives more helpful info on Google. Bing’s search refining features were more helpful than Google’s, according to the study.

For the camera search, Bing attracted 150 percent more user viewing time to the ad space at the top of the search result. Users attention was much more concentrated just below the ad space on the camera search result page on Bing compared to Google, according to the study. The full report is below.

Bing needs to allow users the option of setting the results per page at 100. The current max of 50 per page makes sifting through several pages of results cumbersome.

Thanks for the post, it is very interesting top. I am thinking to make some advertisement in Google or in bing, but I not sure which one is better. Seems like that bing start to catch up and attract more people’s attention. Any suggestion?

Bing is “better”? Sure there are a couple of silly little trinkets on the site such as the max of 100 that another commenter points to. But–

(1) All of these, and many more, are available to those who care in the form of browser plugins even with Google. Notably, the group “those who care” forms about 0.1% of the Internet audience.

(2) More importantly, Bing search results, while certainly better than Live before it, are still tragically off mark in comparison to Google or Clusty.

Sorry MS. No cigar.

There is also a tragic flaw rumored in Bing’s ad placement engine. When resolved, it should hopefully increase the overall revenue/leads generated from using AdCenter. Currently search patterns are tied to the IP address, not the terminal. This means that if the employees at your company show little interest in clicking a paid ad, Bing will no longer display those paid ads for ‘you’, even if ‘you’ are at the buying cycle of your search.

Another issue is that I search for my keywords and often fail to see my paid ads appear. For Example: I search “Pay Per Click Advertising” – I get no sponsored results. How is this possible?

I dont understand why a paid ad is not shown every single time a keyword is searched.
