Google hit with antitrust lawsuit, bigger problem looms

googlesucks_small.jpgADOTAS – Google has another lawsuit to fight.

TradeComet.com filed an antitrust suit against the search giant, accusing it of unfairly manipulating its advertising system to harm a potential competitor. The small web site operates a site called SourceTool.com, a vertical search engine for those seeking business products and services.

The company said Google raised the advertising rates it charged the company after it realized that SourceTool was a potential competitor. TradeComet also said that Google entered into an agreement with Business.com, a SourceTool rival, with more favorable advertising terms.

“Google understood the threat that vertical search engines posed to its business model,” Jonathan Kanter, a partner in Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft, told the New York Times.

In a convenient coincidence, Kanter’s firm represents Microsoft in antitrust issues. Google recently won a Street View privacy suit, but the company might also be dealing with an antagonistic Obama DOJ pick.
