Facebook should crowdsource terms of service
Seriously, that’s all I can say about both Facebook and its users. After enduring blistering criticism, from anti-terms of service groups, blog critics and users, the social network has trashed its new terms of service and reverted back to its old one.
In another note from Mark Zuckerberg: “A couple of weeks ago, we revised our terms of use hoping to clarify some parts for our users. Over the past couple of days, we received a lot of questions and comments about the changes and what they mean for people and their information. Based on this feedback, we have decided to return to our previous terms of use while we resolve the issues that people have raised”
I certainly didn’t like the idea that the rights of my content, even if I had content worth selling, might have been siphoned away by Facebook. I still don’t know if the recently revised ToS would have done that. (Here’s an interesting post breaking down other tos). But I applaud Facebook for revisiting its terms.
Maybe this is the one situation where crowdsourcing terms of service would prove to be a benefit to all involved. Allow lawyers to put it together and post it. Let the comments guide any alterations. You might have some loon outliers, but certainly no one would be surprised at the end.

Once again I must agree with Mr. Barrera – more often than not end-users are wholly unaware of the TOS they agree to, a quick scroll down and click. It says something about how savvy end users are becoming – or at least the savvy of the facebook audience.
Crowdsourcing would be a brilliant idea and offer a level of transparency that many online services lack. Kudos!
