Myspaced gangbangers and Facebooked mobsters

myspace_crimescene_small.jpgADOTAS — I have sifted through the web for information on prospective employees, employers and criminals for years.

I was always amazed at the stupid things people put up.  Shortly after the Virginia Tech shootings, police arrested a college student who made vague threats of violence on campus. They found a cache of weapons at his house. We checked online and there he had a MySpace page with him holding an automatic weapon. We used the photo for the frontpage.

I was reminded of that after reading that the NYPD are checking potential recruits’ online social networks. Police have long monitored the web for criminal activities, whether it was scams or bad guys setting up pages to communicate.  Now the NYPD is forcing prospective recruits to allow them to look through their pages. What are they finding? Gangbangers, racists and talk about violent behavior.

But it’s not only for the small time thugs. Mobsters are using it to connect too, including Facebook pages glorifying godfathers.

I’m just lucky that these easily used social networks weren’t around years ago when I was young and reckless.  I was never a gangbanger nor a mafia lover, but certainly I would have put something stupid up.
