Microsoft Snatches Verizon and Dell

microsoft_small.jpgADOTAS — Microsoft signed deals with Verizon and Dell, as it scrambles to expand its revenue opportunities and search business.

Microsoft will provide cell phone Internet search services for the company, which will soon surpass AT&T Inc as the No. 1 U.S. mobile carrier. While the deal, rumored to be worth about $500 million, seems to be a blow to Google and Yahoo, some are skeptical of the long-term effects.

“The ultimate goal in mobility is contextual awareness and the delivery of highly personalized experiences,” CCS Insight analyst John Jackson told Reuters. “These are competencies Google has in spades, so it may be that Verizon’s customers ultimately end up with an inferior experience relative to what Google might enable.”

Dell announced that Microsoft’s Live Search will be offered as the default search engine in the browser of most Dell consumer and small business PCs, starting Feb. 1. The company, which chose Microsoft over Google, will also include a Live Search and Windows Live Essentials toolbar on new Dell PCs.

So after purportedly forking out $500 million, does Microsoft merely hope users won’t change their default homepage, type in a different URL (like, I don’t know, google.com), or disable a toolbar?

Or, maybe they paid Verizon and Dell all that money to prevent consumers from accessing Google or Yahoo… Glad I’m not a Verizon mobile customer.
