YouTube Future Uncertain

musicnote.jpgADOTAS — The Warner Music Group’s yanking of its videos from YouTube Friday doesn’t really resolve how media companies view YouTube or any other video site.

Do companies  see posting videos as, for the most part, free promotion or do they think they can grow revenue faster and in larger amounts elsewhere, like at Hulu? “Warner reported $639 million in digital revenue for the fiscal year that ended in September. Less than 1 percent of that was generated by YouTube’s ads and fees.”

Just like book publishers, music companies want Google to compensate them. The question is what’s fair?

“If we don’t get this business model right, it’s going to be a lot harder to fix down the road,” an executive told the Times.
