Yahoo Storage: Short Retention Span

yahoo.jpgADOTAS – Yahoo will store personal data gathered from Web surfing for only three months, making it the shortest retention policy among the big three, according to a Reuters report. Previously, the Internet pioneer made computer addresses of its users anonymous after a period of 13 months.

European officials and privacy policy advocates have been pressuring Google, Microsoft and Yahoo to reduce the amount of time they store personal data. Google now stores data for nine months and Microsoft has pledged to reduce storage time to six months if Yahoo and Google matched them.

The big three search engines initially balked at the regulation because they all get most of their revenue by matching ads to searchers’ habits.

The biggest threat is not from Yahoo or Google. Although I will admit both concern me. The biggest threat to privacy is from your ISP. Every thing you do on the Internet goes through your primary Internet connection. From home that is your ISP. The following article on using an anonymous proxy details the risks.
