NYT Realizes Blogs are Influential

breakingnews.jpgADOTAS — Blogs are influential? Who Knew?
(I’m kidding, of course). I ran across this story today in the NY Times that was pegged on a study released two months ago by Buzzlogic that showed blogs influence purchases, more so than social networks, and blog readers trust relevent blog content over social media networks as well.
I’m always astonished by people being astonished at the influence of blogs. Among the many blogs that I follow, I read Instapundit, a popular site written by a law professor. And while I enjoy the political content, the author Glenn Reynolds gets a lot of feedback when he talks about books, cameras, knives and even survival gear. And this influence goes beyond technology purchases and shouldn’t be surprising. His readers over time view him as a credible source, even if, as I do often, they disagree with him on other things.
And by the way, since this article is online, how come they don’t link to the study?

Reader Comments.

Unfortunately, Graeme, it’s not like they’ll know what to do with it. Sort of like giving chimp a voltmeter.

In the ongoing economic downturn (that’s likely to last a while, I believe), what is valuable? Cash? The US is just waiting to inflate its way out of debt. Comodities? That’s one risky bet based on history. Stocks? Some of them.

I believe the thing that holds value in the future is “brand” in the widest sense of the word, and brand means trust. The newpapers are trashing their brand beyond hope.

If you wonder why people listen when Glenn Reynolds suggests certain knives, cameras, books, etc. it’s because he has established a very solid trust with his readers over the years. Reynolds has a very solid brand nowadays.

So I recommend shorting the New York Times and going long on Instapundit.

It gets a clue after the rope breaks and it begins its fall into bankruptcy.

There is no better source for accurate info than a trustworthy blog in my opinion. But if the NY Times amongst others made such bastions of true truth known, they would be going out of business all the sooner.
