jobs_small.jpgADOTAS — A lot of unhappy people will be hitting happy hour during this holiday month, not only for the booze but because they have no money.

ATT is letting thousands go, and Viacom more than 800 workers. Layoffs are planned at People, Time Inc and Sports Illustrated. Adobe needs to slash its budget as well so more will come there. Peter Kafka says Forbes is planning cuts, last month they laid off three dozen. NBCU  is shedding workers, and some sites that are part of IACI could be sold or just closed down.

Does that mean Tina Brown will stay pay decent wages to the worker bees?

I was laid off several months ago from my agency and while I haven’t found a new gig thus far - from recent news - I know that I am among good company. Things are going to have to change in this country and much of that will come from updating our infrastructure; making the necessary sacrifice to brings our jobs back from overseas and implementing a national health plan that will be proactive instead of reactive. We got to start taking care of ourselves and modifying Our by now, pay later” posture that has become a mantra for the masses.

I’m getting tired of all these negative articles. Why not focus on how to make yourself more valuable to your bosses / clients instead of bleak outlooks on the future.

I’d love to see more pieces like Jason Calcanis’ Good News for People Who Hate Bad News: http://calacanis.com/2008/10/28/good-news-for-people-who-hate-bad-news/

Ivan,
I appreciate your post. I think we do a good job, especially in our feature section, of highlighting how companies can survive and prosper in the current market. But we can’t ignore massive layoffs that affect everything we do. Having said that, Jason’s (looong) post was an enjoyable read, I will continue to look for similiar ones.
Thanks,

I see high paying jobs posted on popular job sites -

www.linkedin.com (professional networking)
www.monster.com (keyword job search)
www.realmatch.com (matches jobs based on skills)

I think the media is trying to scare the US workforce.

Susan,

But, even the job boards are laying off works this month.

CareerBuilder had a layoff of 300-400 this week.

The expensive $400-$500 per job posting model may not survive this downturn. Instead job networks that provide free meta search of employers career web sites, cutting out the ad agency supported media sites like Monster and CareerBuilder, will gain even more traffic during this time.

http://www.jobcentral.org/ (non-profit, employer owned job network of employer career web sites)

http://www.simplyhired.com/ (job aggregator supported by CPC and CPA advertising)
