Hulu Hears the Music

musicnote.jpgADOTAS — Licensing fees and revenue sharing seem to be the impetus behind talks of a music partnership.

The yanking of Warner Music Group’s videos from YouTube was really only the latest revenue tantrum from the music companies. They think they can do a better job than video-sharing sites in selling ads, sponsorships and pulling in overall revenue. Now considering they haven’t done too well on their own, you would think they would first create an alternative then start banning videos from (maybe) competitors.

This partnership, which could include Sony BMG, EMI, and Universal Music Group, is looking at Hulu as a destination, or the creation of its own, but would also include YouTube, despite minor tantrums. Screen Digest estimated that Hulu and YouTube would make about $70 million and $100 million, respectively, “but that Hulu would draw level with YouTube next year because advertisers are more comfortable with its professional content”

Music companies have been growing their online revenue. Warner reported $639 million in digital revenue last year, but YouTube ads and fees only accounted for 1 percent of that. Unfortunately Google is tired of paying for content it doesn’t make money on.
