Gawker Sheds Consumerist

gawker1.jpgADOTAS — Gawker Media continues to shed sites as it prepares for advertising armageddon.

In a reasonable purchase, Consumers Union, the publisher of Consumer Reports magazine and ConsumerReports.org, has bought Consumerist.com, a popular consumer watchdog, from Gawker Media.

“We’re delighted to add this vibrant site to our portfolio of information products,” said Jim Guest, President and CEO of Consumers Union. “The Consumerist community is passionate about fair retail practices, truth in advertising, product safety, and other topics that Consumer Reports has championed for more than 70 years. The site is a perfect fit for advancing our mission of creating a fair, safe, and just marketplace.”

In the past year, the Nick Denton web empire has sold Wonkette and the Gridskipper. Denton, despite pulling in the advertising and readers, has streamlined operations, which include Gawker, Defamer and Gizmodo, by either selling properties or firing workers. Denton believes the advertising landscape is going to be bad in the coming year, worse than others have predicted, and all his moves are geared toward being profitable in the upcoming year.

In a side note. An announcement was released with an embargo of 8 a.m. this morning. The NY Times announced it yesterday. Heh.

Just what we need. More consolidation. This just gives the illusion of diversity to a singular source of information.
