Facebook Connect, The “New Social Web”

facebook_small.jpgADOTAS — Social networks still can’t bring in the advertising dollars, but Facebook Connect plans to change that.

Maybe.

The feature allows its members to log onto other sites using Facebook ID and also allows friends’ to see what they’re doing and seeing, both on the social network and the visited site. The idea is to create a new, expanded social web, where some user information is spread over the sites allowing Connect, such as Discovery and the San Francisco Chronicle.

And the revenue? Facebook gives up data, with users’ permission so another Beacon doesn’t erupt, and the sites visited can better target their ads for users. In turn, the sites relay information back to Facebook, so it can structure more specific ads as well. It sounds beautiful. Myspace and others are working on similar features. But as in most web things, no one knows if it will work.

There are so many important issues to get right,” said MySpace VP Jason Oberfest to the Times. “Consumers need to understand where their data is going and how it’s being used.

“Then, if we can get the privacy issues right, if it’s totally clear to the user what is happening, there is potential for advertising,” Mr. Oberfest added. “But certainly not without a lot of testing and consideration.”
