CBS Pumps Up Online Radio Empire With Yahoo Deal

radiodial2.jpgADOTAS – CBS Radio is extending its online reach in a new deal with Yahoo’s free Internet radio service, Launchcast Radio. The service boasts about 150 stations.

Early next year, the companies stations will be combined and CBS will take on advertising sales duties for all. Earlier this year, CBS took over AOL’s 200 Web radio stations and also took on ad sales responsibilities. In all, CBS radio has more than 500 stations now, many of which overlap into the same markets, allowing sales staff to sell ads that can run on CBS, Yahoo and AOL stations at the same time.

Internet radio shops are under increased pressure to pump up advertising revenue. The U.S. Copyright Royalty Board dramatically increased royalties paid to artists played online, draining many Web radio’s coffers.
