Broadband Generation

hispeed.jpgADOTAS — Engulfed by bad news now, the digital world should look forward to a fully connected world if Obama has anything to do with it.

That’s how it looks with legislators, telecom companies and advocates pushing forĀ increasing the availability and building greater quality high-speed Web access in the U.S. (I was surprised to find that the US slipped to 15th from 4th place since 2001 in broadband penetration).

Now obviously there are several reasons, few being altruistic, for this. Cable companies want the tax breaks and subsidies to push into underserved areas, cutting costs and expanding user base. Both reasons would be a boon to web companies and advertisers.

“Remember, you only get to do this once, so you want to build the widest highway possible,” Carl Russo, CEO of Calix, told the Wall Street Journal. Calix supplies equipment to phone and cable providers.

How much would it cost at the beginning? Well, the Telecommunications Industry Association wants a $25 billion grant program. It could be part of the president-elect’s public works stimulus package.
