Your Guide to AD:TECH
ADOTAS EXCLUSIVE — Entry: NEW YORK CITY
Function: noun, geographical place
1. city & port in SE New York at mouth of Hudson River
2. the borough of Manhattan in New York City
3. the city so nice, they named it twice (i.e. “New York, New York”)
4. the location of this weekend’s New York City Marathon
5. the destination of over 10,000 interactive marketers – see AD:TECH
Here we go again – it’s the first weekend in November, which means so many things to so many people: World Series, voting, Marathon weekend, BCS rankings, pay your Ward Media fantasy football dues, recover from Halloween, Florida-Georgia weekend, start shopping and preparing for the holidays – and for many of us, head to New York City for a big freakin’ show called ad:tech.
After many years in the Hilton New York, this will be ad:tech’s last show in this hotel. For those that have been attending ad:tech New York over the years, we’ve seen the exhibition hall go from one level to taking up every square inch on three levels. The traffic and narrow aisles left standing room only, so next year’s show will take place at the Jacob K. Javitz Convention Center. I’ve seen the floor plan – it’s going to be a massive show, all on one level – bring your walking shoes! It almost wants to make me invest in a Vayan Segway to get around….
Before we get to the fun stuff, make sure you’re prepared for the elements. The weather report shows the weekend highs in the mid-50s and lows in the high 30s to low 40s, so if you plan to be outside for any amount of time (i.e. waiting in line to get into one of the many parties), dress accordingly. By the time the show starts, we’ll see lows in the mid 40s and highs in the upper 50s, but still a little chilly for any South Floridians out there.
Okay, now that we’ve got the weather out of the way, on to the parties! There are a multitude of options this show, but in recent years we’ve seen guest lists tighten and stricter security at the doors. Remember, it’s often club security manning the doors at the huge bash your client is throwing, not your account manager. Some of the parties mentioned below are open to any ad:tech attendee, some are RSVP-only, and some are invite-only, no matter who you know. So RSVP early or even try to find a VIP ticket or bracelet from your client, or be prepared to either wait in line for an hour or grease the bouncer’s palm. And don’t complain to me if you can’t get in or even RSVP – maybe you should be doing more business with the sponsors.
Sunday evening kicks off with Glam Interactive Group’s “Glam Rocks” event. Glam is a network of women in interactive marketing, so if you’re a guy going to this event, consider yourself lucky. It kicks off at 7pm for female Glam members and invited guests only – everyone else who has RSVP’ed gets in at 9pm. The Glam Rocks event is brought to you by atomicleads.com, EDebitPay, Leadpile, Revenue Street, The Media Crew, Rextopia, and Swish Marketing.
Sunday’s next big event is the XY7.com’s “No Bull Party 2”. This second installment of last year’s party offers Manhattan’s only mechanical bull, with a bikini bull riding contest starting at 10:30pm. This event kicks off at 9pm at Johnny Utah’s at 25 W 51st Street. Kevin from XY7 thinks he’s getting me on that bull – only after he gets tossed.
If you have to pick only one night to let loose, make it Monday, November 3rd. There is a plethora of parties to pick from, Peter! And bigger parties require more sponsors, so forgive me if I leave anyone off. Our first event is a cocktail party with UnsubCentral at their “Absolut Advertiser and Network Nosh”. If you are an advertiser or a network, visit booth #1301 or email theresa@unsubcentral.com for details on the event.
The first big bash of the evening is the Wicked Fun House ad:tech After Party, sponsored by our friends at The BizOpp Network, GMB Direct, YourDegree.com, ADLinkr, WickedFire, emailDirect.com, and advaliant. Festivities kick off at 8:30pm at Room Service and Ten’s Gentlemens Club – enter through Room Service at 35 East 21 Street.
The show’s most exclusive party may be the Epic NYC Bash at Marquee. One insider dubs this party as “10 times better than the rest” – but good luck getting in… this one is invite-only. The Marquee holds 500 people, so if you would like to attend, please visit the Epic booth on Monday for a bracelet. A portion of the proceeds of this event will go to the Thomas Blake, Sr. Memorial Cancer Research Fund. You can find Marquee at 289 10th Avenue – everything kicks off at 8:45pm.
Starting at 9pm, you can show your social swagger at The Right Touch ad:tech Party. Touch, located at 240 West 52nd Street, is rated the #1 dance club in New York City by Zagat’s 2008/2009 Nightlife Directory. This event is sponsored by COPEAC and SocialHour.
The biggest event of the show could be Headlines & Heroes’ “Money Makers 2” Party. I had the pleasure of co-sponsoring this party last year – H&H Events sure knows how to throw a big one, with Rob Base headlining. This year’s event features Naughty By Nature, with Kool DJ Red Alert on the wheels of steel. Sponsors include Globalwide Media, clickbooth, XY7.com, atrinsic, Grey Goose, GetAds, EDebitPay, FutureAds, Clash Media, Aquasis Media, riplounge.com, and Seed Corn Advertising. It all goes down at 9pm at Pacha, 618 West 46th Street.
In addition to all the extracurriculars surrounding ad:tech, there is some great programming scheduled during the show as well. On the morning of Election Day, Jonathan Klein, the president of CNN/U.S. will be giving the keynote speech to open the conference. On Wednesday morning, Shelly Lazarus, chairman and CEO of Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide will be giving her “Dispatches from the Digital Frontier” keynote. And the rest of the all-star speaker lineup includes brands such as MTV, Nike, Sony, NHL.com, Time, Kraft, and Proctor & Gamble.
The 2008 edition of ad:tech New York looks like it’s going to be one of the biggest and best shows yet with tons of educational and informative programming and even more after-hours diversions. I’ll be headed up early to spend some time with the family, enjoy Halloween in the City, and catch the Gator game at Gin Mill. If I don’t run into you this weekend, I’ll see you at the show!
