google_small.jpgADOTAS – Google and Yahoo are in negotiations with the Justice Department in a bid to stymie an antitrust challenge to their search advertising partnership, The Wall Street Journal reports.

It’s still early days and any agreement is likely a ways off, sources told the paper. In the course of the talks, major concessions have been floated:

“These include capping the volume of Google ads Yahoo would use, assurances that Yahoo would continue to compete in search ads, and a reporting mechanism to ensure compliance, people close to the talks said. U.S. officials hope to impose measures that will ensure that prices advertisers must pay don’t rise significantly after the deal,” the Journal reports.

Also on the table: requiring companies to “disclose more about the mechanics of their closely-guarded search-advertising technology than they want to” and caps on how many Google ads Yahoo will be allowed to display.

Advertisers and investigators continue to fight the deal, saying it will create an ad monopoly, prevent competition and lead to price-gouging.
