Google Launches Ad-Supported Music Service in China

chinaflag1.jpgADOTAS – Google has launched a free, ad-supported music search service in China that provides users with access to free downloads of licensed songs. Tens of thousands of Chinese songs will be searchable by singer and song title; users can download their picks from partner Top100.cn, a site with financial backing from NBA star Yao Ming.

Ad revenue will be shared with Top100.cn and its music partners. The deal moves the music industry and at least one Internet giant a step closer to finding a workable revenue plan and a legal way for users to access the thousands of music files floating around the Web.

“The Internet industry should by no means stand in the opposite camp against the music industry,” Google China President Kai-fu Lee said in a statement. “Google always believes profoundly that mutual interest, rather than monopoly, is the key to sustainable growth.”

The service will challenge the dominant Chinese download service Baidu.com Inc., which currently faces lawsuits charging it with copyright violations. More than 99% of music files distributed in China are pirated, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry.
